If you’re thinking of buying some chocolates for the missus this Valentine’s Day, a little friendly advice. Shop early, because I expect this Cowbell special is going to create a chocolate shortage in this part of the world. This one is a loco cocoa imperial storm trooper of a brew. More chocolate in this one than on a Willy Wonka production line a week before Easter. *
Cowbell’s nitro stout was no pop or a pffft, just a little poof. So this one was under a lot of pressure to deliver. The result, a pop loud enough to wake a cranky old man with his hearing aids sitting on the counter. A loud and proud, stand out in the crowd, kinda pop. And a bottom’s up widget pour hard pour that was all that and more. 404mL in the tall can meant a 69 mL widget. Coincidence? Of course it was, what were you thinking?
A beauty nitro presentation. A double dark dark chocolate pour with a creamy tan dense foam atop. A crème de cacao Baileys aroma. The taste is chocolate on chocolate with a dash of cocoa and a milk chocolate finish. A nitro creamy mouthfeel which I think saved the day on this one. Despite its 9.5% ABV the strength is in the flavour, it’s not at all boozy. Big swig lovers beware, I attempted a big swig, which may have been an early tactical error on my part. It is an imperial sipping small swigger after all. Maximum flavour, it’s not really boozy but definitely a stout on steroids. About as creamy and chocolaty an imperial as you can get.
What I liked about it was how the nitro creamy balanced things out and made it an approachable imperial. Definitely a chocolate lover’s libation.
