A Home Game

If you’re a baseball fan, the fall means the fall classic, as in the World Series. And this time around our very own Blue Jays are in the hunt, “we want it all” they tell us.

I used to play a little ball back in the day, before age became more than just a number. I’m no Buck Martinez but I can tell a walk from a run and a balk from walk off. Unlike my home life, when it comes to baseball I can usually figure out what’s going on.

My wife on the other hand has never had any interest in the game. The only break from her Netflix binging is our annual Super Bowl date and she only watches that for the commercials. But her sister is visiting and she saw a game the Blue Jays won against the Yankees and now she’s excited about the Blue Jays. So the sisters wanted to watch the game with me last night, a real-life Sisters act. A home game that I wasn’t sure I was game for.

First of all, the third-degree bright lights are on, but it’s not the Spanish Inquisition. The lighting is required so my wife can knit while “watching” the game.

The sisters are still talking about the morning news and how the world is going to hell in a handbasket. I’m trying to hear the game over the current events recap, being more interested in a world series than the serious world. In the meantime, the Blue Jays execute a perfect double play. I said, perhaps a bit facetiously “You’re missing a good game.” My Wife replied: “you’re interrupting, don’t be rude.”

Later in the game the announcer is talking about a new player that joined the team this year and says, “he fit like a glove.”

My Wife said: “He was bit by love? What does that mean?”

I replied: “He said ‘he fit like a glove’.”

My Wife: “NO he didn’t, he said, “bit by love”.

Me: “Let me see, when he joined the team he was bit by love. Makes sense. A far more plausible statement then when he joined the team he fit like a glove.”

My Wife: “No need to be sarcastic about it.”

This is a classic illustration of how, even when I’m right (a rare occurrence for sure), somehow I’m still wrong.

My sister-in-law is lots of fun and would cheer every strike and every hit. She was cheering and whooping it up quite a bit. I finally figured out why.

Me: “You know that was a replay.”

Sister-in Law: “Oh, have I been cheering for the replays too.”

Me: “Yep.”

I’m glad the Blue Jays won last night. I can’t imagine what it would have been like if they lost.
