A Bittersweet Barrelshed

Barrelshed Pale Ale

Shawn & Ed Brewing Co.

6% Alcohol

We’ve made a couple of trips to the Lagershed with Shawn & Ed. Way back in the day we sampled their thermos bottle lager,  and much more recently we were back for their black. But tucked in behind the brewery, unbeknownst to us COM previously, * there is the Barrelshed. And it’s time to roll out the barrel with a SHED Pale Ale and see if it’s a barrel full of fun, or if we’ll be singing the Barrelshed blues.

A copper-coloured pour, darker than its pic may imply. A thin as in barely present off white froth, just a thread of shed head. A full throttle toffee nose, big time caramel aroma and not much else. First swig is toffee and bitters together, all in for lots of flavour, with an acerbic bitter aftertaste. I usually get turned off by those backend dry biting bitters but this toffee bittersweet body, with bitter bite to follow, works for this brew. Everything mellows as you get into it, but the toffee and bitters still all come at you at once, any semblance of sequence be damned.

A unique and flavourful pale. You don’t really notice the slightly elevated ABV (6.5% on the website, 6% on the can).  I enjoyed it, another trip to the Barrelshed may be in order.

*Editor’s Comment: You are being redundant once again.

*Editor’s Comment: Saying “redundant once again” isn’t being redundant, but the term “once again” may qualify as an oxymoron.
