Bright lights, big city, gone to my beer’s head.

I tried a Rainhard lite, should’ve had a Guinness instead.”*

Navigating the bright lights of the big city, at a fancy pants gala in suit and tie. What on earth would motivate me to put on a tie you’re wondering. Two simple words. Open bar. As I siddle up to the aforementioned bar I see a Classic Lite on ice. If you are not familiar with an open bar the concept is quite simple, free beer. But since the bartender poured such a pretty pour I thought a tip was in order. “Silver is the new gold” I told him, an investing tip that is pure gold, or silver as the case may be. The true professional that he was, he didn’t acknowledge or thank me for the tip but moved on to his next customer.

We have sampled a few Rainhards in our day, but none have attained super suds status. Kapow! had no punch and Above and Beyond wasn’t. Will this Munich style lite lager light up my night? Unfortunately, no.

Things started out great, free beer and a beauty pour. Golden and clear with a practically perfect sky dome foam head. The malt aroma was not at all heavy, so hard to pick up. First taste is a malt base with a grainy taste overlayed and a flat no finish. Not hoppy or crisp, and no lager sweet. Just malt and grain with a flat dry finish. Basic yes, classic no.

It turns out in this case I got what I paid for.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1961 hit song “Bright Lights, Big City” by Jimmy Reed is a classic blues country number. “Bright lights big city, gone to my baby's head, I'd tried to tell the woman, but she don't believe a word I said.”
