Another defining moment in the history of COMDB! Entangled “to be involved in a confusing or difficult situation.” Used in a sentence. “I am entangled in the tasting of this dark IPA.”  Lake of Bays tell us we will be “wrapped up in flavour.” Wrapped maybe, rapt, not so much.

We previously rode out the storm with a LoB Black IPA. We cracked the code with a NO 4:33 Black IPA, and bid a fond farewell to Sawdust City’s dank and dark.  As far as GLB’s 666 Dark IPA goes, we came to the conclusion that the devil made them brew it. None of these offerings from the dark side achieved super suds status. Will this one buck the trend? Nope.

A tall dark and handsome pour and it’s going to its head. As in a full head of foam, confident enough to stand up for itself. Roast malt aroma with mild hops in there somewhere. First taste is a dark malt lager with some fizz, no IPA to speak of so I won’t. Shortly after the first swig, as in the second swig, some pronounced bitters follow the roasted malt and remain in the aftertaste. Now its all coming together unfortunately, in an entanglement of roast malt and hop bitters, complex and unbalanced as the pine bitters take over the show. I quite enjoy a dark beer and I do enjoy an IPA, but these dark IPA’s just aren’t my cup of craft.

Towards the end of the quaff the dark lager body returned to the scene of the crime, no longer entangled in the pine bitters, but it was too little too late. This beer had its moments but they never even lasted a minute. Dark IPAs are a complex combination that aren’t for everyone, including me.
