It’s 4:33 Somewhere

4:33 Black IPA

New Ontario Brewery

6% Alcohol

4:33* Black IPA, is this The Imitation Game or a beer tasting? If I get the Wordle in 3 I feel like I have won the war, but I would rather be cracking a cold one than cracking a code.

This isn’t the first Black IPA I have quaffed so I am not a stranger in a strange land** when it comes to the genre. I wanted to note that because if you haven’t tried one before your initial reaction may be confused, or not what you were expecting, or too complex.

This New Ontario  black IPA pours black as coal on coal  with a few bubbles heading towards the light. It is headless with a confused nose and what nose wouldn’t be confused with no head to hang out on. The aroma is a bit of hops with a stout snout. First swig is strong roasted malts, fizzy with a bitter finish. Complex and challenging. One can only hope that things settle down a bit. It has a nice mouthfeel, full flavoured and still bit of a burnt bitter finish.  As the bitter begins to fade a bit it reveals a refreshing full flavour body roasted malt with a bit of a bitter aftertaste.  More of an evening watch the game summer brew for those missing a stout or porter. Not as smooth as the two aforementioned brews but nevertheless refreshing. Not for those of a weak constitution or looking for an IPA experience, it’s not that. It is unique and interesting, a departure from the everyday.

*Editor’s Comment: Apparently the 4:33 refers to the time that the sun sets on the shortest day of the year in Ontario, the winter solstice, which is December 21st. Dark day, black IPA? Not sure what relevancy this has with anything in particular but it seems like a viable explanation.

**Editor’s Comment: “Stranger in a Strange Land” is a 1961 science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein. The title "Stranger in a Strange Land" is a direct quotation from the King James Bible (taken from Exodus 2:22). It won the 1962 Hugo Award for Best Novel (Heinlein's book, not the Bible) and became the first science fiction novel to enter The New York Times Book Review's best-seller list.
