My old buddy JT participated in dry February. * The first 27 days were hell but I’m guessing at midnight on the 28th he probably popped a top and proposed a toast “Thank god it’s not a leap year”. Last night we toasted to a Damp March with a couple of cold craft Kölsch, an umlaut inspired round.
I got thinking about that umlaut and where I had seen it before. How about röck and röll. Blue Öyster Cult** has one, as well as some other bands that aspired to be them, such as Motörhead, Mötley Crüe, and Queensrÿche. Apparently, it does have a purpose, but in the case of these bands, it is there just to look cool.
We have reviewed a few Kölsch, umlaut and sans umlaut, including a purple one, a peachy one, a half cut followed by a cut above (which was a cut above), one by the lakeside and one by the country side. This brew from Catapult is a Kölsch style lagered ale. Seems like a fusion of tastes and styles and I am anticipating a complex craft.
Golden with a slight haze to it, a less than heady pour. An aroma of mild malt with a touch of fruit? Funky, with an emphasis on the “fun” I hope. Much like the aroma, it’s a funky mix of malt and fruit, as complex as it’s name would suggest. I am withholding a verdict until I collect more evidence, but I don’t have a case, just a can. An odd combo, it has it’s moments and tends to grow on you but so does ear hair. My mind remains intact.***
An interesting, smooth Kölsch, not harsh or bitter, but with the fruit and malt competing at times. Different, not a cut above, perhaps a cut in between?
