As far as gardening goes, don’t call on me to buff the begonias or pot the petunias, my thumbs are a boring and typical flesh colour, no green opposable digits here. But when it comes to Oktoberfest I have no problem planting myself in a beer garden for an evening. I remember Lynn Anderson’s famous Oktoberfest song. “I beg your pardon, I never promised you a beer garden, along with the great steins, you end up with the dregs sometimes.”*
Lynn sure hit the nail on the head, and that’s the public service that COMDB provide, differentiating the super suds from those dastardly dregs. We started out our prolonged Muskoka Oktoberfest weekend with a tasty cure to sober October, then ran into a misanthrope maple amber. A fun-loving hyper-hyphenated IPA was followed by a sanguine and serious Sunday Tripel and now it seems fitting to finish with a Muskoka based Canvas Bier Garden,
This fester has a golden clear pour, with a dusting of a bright white fall frost to blow off. A light basic malt aroma, no surprises. Fiest taste is malt watery, it is easy drinking, with a touch of contrary graininess. A bit of lager sweet sneaking in. A basic European lager for two thirds of the quaff. But as it warmed the graininess gave away to a somewhat acerbic bitter finish, as unwelcome as a beer mooching neighbour.
Lesson learned, keep this beer ice cold and drink it fast.
