Willibald Brewery

10% Alcohol

There was the Tulip mania of 1634.* And Beatlemania of 1963. And the present-day megalomaniac that is our Editor. ** Some may even say that IPA’s are a mania in the brewing industry.*** Enter Willibald’s Mania, a triple IPA 10 percenter that will not only whet your whistle but will probably warp it too.

Willibald’s Kuni at 8.2% was double time juicy. Then they went Full Tilt on us at 8.5% and we not only survived, we thrived. Both super suds. But 10%? A triple that’s two beers in one, if anyone’s counting. Time to see if this brew is a manic depressive or a manic impressive.

A super thick OJ pour with pulp. It has a boozy citrus grapefruit aroma. The first taste is major citrus juice, grapefruit brisk bitters and a sweet sharp boozy kick and a boozy bitter aftertaste. Every bit a 10 percenter and holding nothing back.  It starts out with too much of everything except moderation! Progress is made slow and steady, with me being less steady as progress was made.  Some mango is a welcome addition to the party, as it settle into a drinkable super juicer. I didn’t have the nerve or the bollocks to try a big swig with this high voltage brew.

If you’ve got a hankerin’ for two beers in one, in terms of ABV, flavour and kick, I’ve got just the beer for you.

*Editor’s Comment: The Tulip mania in Europe ran from 1634 to 1637. During that time the selling price of tulips rose dramatically to unexplainable levels. At its peak, certain tulip bulbs were selling for 10 times what a skilled artisan would earn a year. The boom dramatically collapsed in early 1637.

**Editor’s Comment: How about the dipsomaniac that is our Reviewer.

***Editor’s Comment: From a relatively obscure fringe beer style to the dominant genre in the craft beer market, IPAs are a mania that have not yet run their course. Approximately 50% of the craft beer market are IPAs, but the steep growth curve representing IPA sales over the past 10 years appears to have peaked.
