Shadow Chaser

Indie Alehouse Brewing Co.

Peter Pan chased his shadow until he caught it.

We recently answered the age-old questionWhat’s in a name?”, that being some letters usually organized in a recognizable way and the occasional hyphen. But Indie Alehouse has dubbed these sunny suds Shadow Chaser? What’s that all about? I seem to recall Peter Pan’s shadow went missing, but Wendy was good enough to keep it for him until he returned.* How about all those arch villains like Shiwan Khan, just dying to catch The Shadow.**  You may not be familiar with the story but The Shadow knows.

Maybe shadow chaser*** is a fit for a hopeless depth of depression dark dank draught of a black lager, but for a sunshiny summery IPA? I guess it’s a better name than “Crack a Window”. Let’s see how it fares in the taste department.

A hazy clear golden orange pour, a glass full of contradictions that started with the name and just kept going. A full thick as a brick feisty head, not settling soon. A citrus slightly tropical stone fruit aroma, more mixed messages. The first froth disruption is a citrus tropical fruit with a candy tang to it. A bright light fruit free for all, with a bit of foam, mild hops and no bitters. Bit of a fluffy mouthfeel to it which makes sense with the dense head. Turns out to be a nice refreshing easy drinking IPA.

A sunny super suds IPA, chasing the shadows away. Aha, now its name makes sense.

*Editor’s Comment: Sir James Matthew Barrie wrote the 1904 play “Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grown Up”. Before his death in 1937 he gave the rights of the play to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London

**Editor’s Comment: The 1930 radio show “Detective Story Hour” had a mysterious narrator known as “The Shadow”, a vigilante who had a unique ability to cloud men’s minds. “What evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows.” The character was so popular that a series of stories featuring him was published in “The Shadow Magazine”. A more recent recreation of the character was in the 1994 movie “The Shadow” starring Alec Baldwin as Lamont Cranston (aka The Shadow). Shiwan Khan, the last living descendant of Genghis Khan, was one of the many nemesis of The Shadow.

***Editor’s Comment: The term “chasing shadows” means trying to achieve or find something that is impossible to find or does not exist.
