Took the grandkids out for dinner the other day to a high-end classy restaurant, and lo and behold it was “kid’s eat free day” at Wacky Wings. Nice surprise. How about a non-descript little can of brown that ends up being a super suds brew extrodinaire. That’s a nice surprise for sure.

One of the great things about trying new brews is you’re never quite sure what you have in hand until you blow off some froth and take a quaff. There is such variety these days that even a type of brew that may not be your go to can be a go getter. And we all know that the naming game is just that, lots of fun and frolic but usually not an indication of what’s in the can, bottle or glass.

We are down on the Anderson farmstead again, and they don’t mess around with any fancy pants names. They call their IPA, IPA, the name of their stout is Stout. And this brown is named…. you guessed it, Brown. I am an Anderson Ales fan and what we COM would love to do is help them out a bit. How about a beer naming party. Here are a few suggestions for this brew.

“Anderson is The One” an oblique reference to “The Matrix”.*

“Brown on the Farm” Watch your step!

“Brown is the new Black” makes a statement, in a fashion.

“James Brown Getting Down” and I feel good about it.**

“Not Browned Off Quaff” includes a nice British twist to it for this traditional British brown.***

“Good Grief Charlie Brown.” Even better if Anderson’s master brewer is named Charlie. The picture on the can could have Lucy pulling a stein of beer away just as Charlie Brown is going to grab it, and he falls off his bar stool. Ok, maybe not such a good image for 6 year olds to be at the bar drinking beer, back to the drawing board on this one.

This little brown pours brown as a black bear, or black as a brown bear, take your pick. A dark nut brown.   Porter on the nose, a veritable flavour factory getting ready for a record production year aroma. One thing I have noticed about Anderson brews is they are all big flavour brews and this one is no exception. First swig, you guessed it, full flavour, roasted malt nutty.  A porter like brown or a brown like porter. Great flavour, most likely too much for your regular bud light drinker, but a treat for a porter lover. The traditional English Brown was a close first cousin of English porters so the similarity shouldn’t be surprising, but modern browns are all over the place these days, so it is a nice surprise (even though it shouldn’t be). Smooth yet flavourful, with a nice lager mouthfeel, full roasted malt and a slight coffee burnt finish which seems fitting for some unknown inexplicable and illogical reason. I am not a huge Brown’s fan (Cleveland or beer) but I loved this one. Great beer.

*Editor’s Comment: In the 2005 movie “The Matrix”, Keanu Reeves plays Neo (an anagram for One) and his matrix/human name is Thomas Anderson. “Mr. Anderson is the One”. Oblique is right.

**Editor’s Comment: The 1965 release “I Got You (I Feel Good)” was written by James Brown and memorably performed by James Brown and the Famous Flames.

***Editor’s Comment: “Browned off” means annoyed or unhappy about something and is British slang, dating back to WWI. It appears it originated from Royal Air Force slang regarding metalwork that had become rusty. The RAF was founded in 1918 by combining The Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.
