Dinger! Dinger! Dinger!

Left Field Brewery

11% Alcohol

Is it high ABV week at COMDB? Not to be outdone by an SC Bigger Deal at 9% or some Vintage St. Ambroise at 9.2%, Left Field’s heavy hitter swinging for the fences high octane take no prisoners triple is on deck and in my glass with their 11% Triple IPA.  A dinger is a recognizable baseball term, especially for Blue Jays fans, but I wondered why a baseball name like Triple Play IPA wouldn’t be a better fit? * Or if they wanted to be more offensive Triple seems like a good basic baseball brew name. Just saying.

On the can it says “It’s outta here” but a triple by its very nature stays in the ballpark. Of course when it comes to a dinger, the ball is a souvenir. And when it comes to rounding those bases, just like Dorothy said “there’s no place like home.”** Spring training has started so I’m getting into baseball mode.

I approach triples with a certain degree of trepidation. Triple Ducks was almost one too many ducks, Mania was maniacal, and Fuzz Face was true to its name. They sound scary but truth be told we have had a couple of super suds triple IPAs grace our pages. *** Time to see if this Dinger is a hit.

A bright golden pour with 11% of my glass bright white head and ABV. A tropical juice hops nose strong enough but not overbearing. First taste is a creamy mouthfeel, tropical stone fruit juicy with a bit of a bite but not that boozy… yet. It is triple juicy going to a hoppy bitter with a mild backend bite. I found it to be quite accessible for a triple.  Didn’t have the cajones or the liver to risk a big swig, but half a big swig still has major fruit to go with strong hoppy bitters.

The 11% was intimidating but LF has made an accessible triple that was an enjoyable experience.

*Editor’s Comment: Strike Brewing out of San Jose California, another baseball focused brewer, has an Imperial IPA called Triple Play. Lawson’s out of Waitsfield Vermont has an IPA called Triple Play IPA but it is a standard (not imperial) IPA.

**Editor’s Comment: In the year 1900 book by Frank Baum “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” Dorothy does say “There’s no place like home” during her travels, but the last line in the book is "I am so glad to be at home again!". The phrase "Oh, Auntie Em—there's no place like home!" is the last line of the 1939 movie “The Wizard of Oz”.

***Editor’s Comment: Out of 8 triple IPAs reviewed to date (including this one) the average rating is 14. The highest rating is a 16, the lowest is an 11.

Final Rating: It's a Hit at 15 out of 20
