Waka Waka

Waka

Water’s rising, time to pair up because the ark doesn’t take singles. But if you’re a Kiwi, high tides are no problem. You have your trusty waka on standby, maybe two if you’ve got a big family. * But you need to be well balanced, you don’t want to tip the waka, although come to think of it, that’s what I’m about to do.

The Fine Balance brew crew are attempting their latest balancing act with Riwaka and Riwaka Kief to whip up this IPA on the double. For those of us who aren’t brewers but only fans, Riwaka is a New Zealand hop. As for a kief, they take the hops and then concentrate, but they don’t just think about it like you’re doing right now, they actually do it. And they end up with a vial of high potency Riwaka! Riwakawaka perhaps? Perhaps.  Fonger knows the process, sweet leaf to “high” potency liquid, put that in your pipe and smoke it.  **

A creamy orange pour with a solid one finger head. Thick enough to float a nail. A fruitful snootful, with a citrus grapefruit juicy aroma. A creamy mouthfeel with a tropical citrus to grapefruit bitters, certainly balanced but as strong a double as you’ll ever see, or taste. But I’ve been participating in the Beach Ball Body Program™ and working out on my doubles too. So after a couple of swigs you have to hand it to me, I’m handling the situation quite handily. As one would expect, a big swig increases the impact that I had to brace for, but the balance saves the day.

Strong but well balanced, and super juicy too, this double is every bit a double and a good one.

*Editor’s Comment: A waka is a traditional Māori canoe.

**Editor’s Comment: Riwaka is a hop variety grown in New Zealand. Usually hops are processed into pellets for transport and brewing but a kief is a hop in liquid form, which can make for a more intense taste and a creamier mouthfeel. The term Kief has more traditionally been applied to cannabis, a kief being the accumulated resin glands of the plant, which have a much higher THC content than the dried leaf itself.
