Back to Basics Out of the Bottle

Original Lager

Sleeman Brewing & Malting Co.

5% Alcohol

Nice patio dinner with the missus, then out on the lake and wetted the net, yep caught me a fat bass-terd or two, then a moonlight cruise. Only one thing left on my to do list to do today, that’s right, quaff me a cold one on the boathouse. But after all the fancy pants pints, including  Princess Pants and Track Pants, not to mention the not in fashion Corduroy pants, it seemed like a good time for a full throttle out of the bottle back to basics beer.

Imagine my surprise to find that although we have reviewed Sleeman’s Clear (our preferred pairing with pizza pint), their Honey Brown and their new release, Honey Blonde, we have never reviewed their Original Lager! Time to remedy that situation.

No pour to adore on this one. Just swig and savour suds. In response to a powerful thirst there were a few big swig tests administered, and this one went down faster than a SpaceX launch. A real bottle rocket. A light golden and clear in the bottle, lighter than the beer pic would lead one to believe. Malt smooth with the traditional lager sweet. No hops, bitters, fruits, flavours, spices or any other assorted added accoutrements * we so often see. A bit more flavour than the big brewers, including their owner’s,** the origin of this “original” could well be Sleeman’s original so perhaps it is qualified as a crafters quaff. Regardless of the pedigree, my trip back to basics was a success. This is a nice, tasty craft lager.

*Pedantic Editor’s Comment: Although an actual alliteration (like that one), the phrase “assorted added accoutrements” is not only doubly redundant but the term “accoutrements” usually refers to clothing as opposed to additions to a beverage.

**Editor’s Comment: Sleeman was established in Guelph Canada in the 1830’s but lost its license during the prohibition years of the 1930’s. It was re-founded in 1988 by John Sleeman using the original family recipes. In 2006 Sapporo bought Sleeman for $400M.
