Barely Bare Bear

Bear Naked Lager

Holman Brewing Company

The Most Spectacular Bear Feeder in the World

We have had no shortage of beers with bears to deal with. There was a bear on the run, bear hugs and huggy bears, bear wrestlers, bearded bears (aren’t they all), ominous omnivores, boxing bruins and hibernating grizzlies. The most spectacular bird feeder in the world even catered to a little black one. Almost as many bears as in Smokey and the Bandit.* We’ve also noticed that a number of brewers like to suggest we drop our drawers for a daring dip, to bare more than our souls so to speak, with suggestive suds like Skinny Dippin’ Stout and Clothing Hoptional.  So it should come as no surprise that today we are dealing with a bear of the naked variety.

This unclothed ursine from Holman pours golden clear, unadorned by any accoutrements such as clothing or head. A lager sweet aroma. First taste is fizzy apple, almost seems like an off taste, could be the beer or could be the reviewer. Either way an odd start, maybe this bear should put some clothes on.  Fizz remains but light malt starts to overtake the apple. As I progressed the mild malt fizz faded and some slight bitters showed up but no real lager sweet. Certainly smooth and finally a touch of sweet where the apple used to be. Dangerously smooth is Holman’s descriptor. Smooth yes, and yet I never felt I was in any danger.

*Editor’s Comment: The 1977 movie Smokey and the Bandit introduced us to a wide array of CB lingo such as 10-4 good buddy, you got your ears on, and where’s your 20. A smokey bear is a police officer. A bear in the air is a police helicopter. The main Smokey Bear in the movie was played by Jackie Gleason who led a cross country chase of the Bandit (Burt Reynolds), and his “seat cover” (passenger) Sally Field.
