Ronnie: You should try Cameron’s Strawberry Milkshake IPA. It’s to die for.
Me: I would much prefer trying something to live for, but I’ll give it a go anyway.
I’m parked on that old spinning stool * at Cameron’s Malt Shoppe and they’re serving up their No Straw Sundae Strawberry Special on a Tuesday, and I have a few questions. First of all, why? It seems to me the world could get along just fine without a Strawberry Milkshake IPA. Secondly who’s Ronnie? Both these questions remain unanswered. So Joan and I put another dime in the jukebox, because I love Rock n’ Roll, and I settle into this questionable quaff. **
A radiant rouge of a pour, with plenty of pink particles in suspension. A slightly off-white cream vanilla whip topper, some tutti fruity froth completes the picture. Definitely a strawberry aroma with some hoppy tang, a strawberry sour on the nose. First taste is strawberry to hops then to a boozy finish, it has a bit of a backend boozy bite to it with a sweet vanilla aftertaste. The strawberry isn’t what I would call subtle but it’s not over the top either. The vanilla adds some sweet to the mix but isn’t overtly vanilla-ish. The strawberry sweet combo stays the course as the hops and booziness back off, making for a relatively smooth finish and a well balanced dessert IPA.
An odd but endearing mix that actually works. I don’t think it will show up on the COMDB AGM tasting list but it was a pleasant surprise last night.
*Reviewer’s Comment: Not to be confused with that old stinking stool that is left by my arch nemesis, that reeking rodent the otter, and his daily dock dump.
**Editor’s Comment: Written by Alan Merrill and Jay Hooker and released in 1975 by their band The Arrows, the song “I Love Rock n’ Roll” was covered by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts in 1981 and was a number one hit around the world. The music video for the song received substantial airplay on the new music network at the time, MTV.
