How Many Ways Can You Skin a Cat?

Oct 20, 2024 | Rants / Articles

It’s often been said there is more than one way to skin a cat. Based on the commonly accepted notion as to the longevity of a cat, it would appear there are 9 ways,* after which you have a dead cat on your hands. Unless of course it’s Schrödinger’s cat** in which case the quantum of lives is definitely in question and could be both one and/or none.

I have cleaned a few fish in my day and the cleanup is as much work as the cleaning.  So regardless of the number of ways it can be done, I would guess that skinning a cat would be messy business at the best of times.

And there’s a good chance you would have the Alley Cat Allies on your doorstep, or some other fanatical feline fringe group hell bent on protecting the household mouser from mistreatment, let alone mutilation.

It seems like these days you can’t swing a cat without hitting an animal adoring activist.

*Editor’s Comment: The notion of a cat having nine lives seems to derive from Egyptian mythology. Atum-Ra, a sun god who assumed a feline form when visiting the underworld was the embodiment of nine lives in one.

**Editor’s Comment: Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger postulated that a hypothetical cat may be considered both alive and dead simultaneously because its fate is linked to a random event that may or may not occur.
